The Acts of God - Part 3

Hi!!

I hope you’re enjoying the study of the book of Acts. Today’s passage looks at what was really the Church. This may surprise you.

When people hear the word “Church” today they often think about an old-fashioned building with old-fashioned people inside it singing old-fashioned hymns. Or they may even think about a modern building with modern songs coming from it. In fact, the church is not the buildings at all. The Church is people and what amazing people they were as we read in the book of Acts! They were anything but old fashioned! They were dynamic, lively, joyful witnesses to Jesus. Why? Because He lived in them. Let’s find out more.

Let’s find out what the Bible says…

Bible Reading

Acts 2:42 – Acts 3:10

43Everyone was amazed by the many miracles and wonders that the apostles worked. 44All the Lord's followers often met together, and they shared everything they had. 45They would sell their property and possessions and give the money to whoever needed it. 46Day after day they met together in the temple. They broke bread together in different homes and shared their food happily and freely, 47while praising God. Everyone liked them, and each day the Lord added to their group others who were being saved.

Acts 3

Peter and John Heal a Lame Man

1The time of prayer was about three o'clock in the afternoon, and Peter and John were going into the temple. 2 A man who had been born lame was being carried to the temple door. Each day he was placed beside this door, known as the Beautiful Gate. He sat there and begged from the people who were going in.

3The man saw Peter and John entering the temple, and he asked them for money. 4But they looked straight at him and said, "Look up at us!"

5The man stared at them and thought he was going to get something. 6But Peter said, "I don't have any silver or gold! But I will give you what I do have. In the name of Jesus Christ from Nazareth, get up and start walking." 7Peter then took him by the right hand and helped him up.

At once the man's feet and ankles became strong, 8and he jumped up and started walking. He went with Peter and John into the temple, walking and jumping and praising God. 9Everyone saw him walking around and praising God. 10They knew that he was the beggar who had been lying beside the Beautiful Gate, and they were completely surprised. They could not imagine what had happened to the man.

Consider this…

  1. What did the Lord’s followers spend their time doing? (v43-47)

  2. What was Peter able to offer the man? (Vs 1-6)

  3. By what power was the lame man healed? (Vs 6-7)

  4. Does God still work so powerfully today and what does He ask of us?

To Think About

They must have been amazing times during the Acts of the Apostles. God still chooses to act by miracles even today but that doesn’t mean that we should need miracles to believe in Him. He just says to believe and obey and all the glory belongs to Him.

Memory Verse

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.
— John 16:13

Why not learn more about the Holy Spirit and what Jesus promised in John 16. Remember to pray over what you read. The Holy Spirit still speaks to us today.
